Note: This is a Book Stall After Hours Event! Space is limited, and tickets are required!
Join us for an evening with Tavi Gevinson, the founder and editor-in-chief of Rookie, an online magazine for teenage girls. Tavi is also a sought-after speaker, and an actress, having starred most recently in Stephen Karam's revivial of The Cherry Orchard, as well as Kenneth Lonergan's Tony-nominated play This is Our Youth.
Her newest book, Rookie On Love, features work from a cross-section of American culture, including John Green, Janet Mock, Rainbow Rowell, and Jenny Straub, among others. In a starred review, Kirkus says, "Containing poetry, essays, interviews, graphic short stories, and fiction, covering doggie love, Arthurian love, and grandmother love, the book offers a niche of love that all women can connect to. A thoughtful, light read celebrating a universal emotion."
Tavi's online magazine Rookie gives voice to girls, encouraging them to speak up, to meet up, and to make stuff. It empowers them to submit their stories, ideas, and artwork to the site and participate in media rather than letting it control them. It's a supportive environment where many have felt comfortable sharing the details of their inner lives, particularily when it comes to love.
Tavi Gevinson's career in media began when she created the blog Style Rookie at age eleven. She was profiled by the New Yorker in 2010, and in 2011, at the age of fifteen, launched Rookie on line. She has since spoken at TEDxTeen, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Melbourne Writer's Festival, and the University of Wisconsin's Distinguished Lecture Series, among others.
You can choose a ticket that admits two people (a mother-daughter pair, for example) and includes a single copy of Rookie On Love, or a ticket that admits one person and includes a copy of Rookie On Love. Ms. Gevinson will be happy to sign copies of these books, and her other Rookie titles will be available for purchase as well.
